Christmas in a boxcar
The year was 1960. I just moved to Chicago and I would spend Christmas alone the first ever away from my family. I bought gifts for everyone and carefully packed in two large boxes, and then released them at the office Express Railway. I knew shipping by rail has been slow, but since I sent the very beginning I knew it would happen before Christmas.
I can not remember now what the gifts were, but I do remember that everyone has been very special this year. In fact, I was able get away, after all, so I decided to go to Peoria and has come to my parents door and surprise everyone on Christmas Eve.
And they were surprised, but not as surprised as me, or should I say, as stunned as I was to discover that the gifts never arrived. My turn kept reactions between disbelief and disappointment, and then. . I mad, and I thought, the more I've become unbalanced until I was on the brink of a wild-eyed fit. My mother tried to calm me down. She did not like the package had not arrived, she was just happy that I was at home. Who was more than enough for her. She said: "Oh, do not worry. They will probably deliver in a few days. Come on, let's have some hot eggnog. My father agreed.
Well, it was not good enough for me. I said: "Get your coats, we're going to beware! "My father told me:" What? "Why?" There will not be anyone there on Christmas Eve. "My mother told me: "Oh, Sharon, you have just arrived. Let's not worry about that now."
But they knew all two what sign I was born under and when kicked in the catfish, there is no way to stop a bull. Besides, I felt always an adventure in the making.
So, everyone bundled up and we headed for the end of the city. With hindsight, I realize what they had good athletes always been. . Especially last night, letting me drag them out of the house on what must have seemed like a mad chase wild geese.
My father was in the bath of things at once. As we drove he began remembering the history of the ancient station, he told us so often-how once, years ago, he saw Nat King Cole. It was late at night, and Cole and his band had just finished playing a concert in town and they were there on the edge of the Rock Island Line and take the train back to Chicago. He said he remembered tired, they all looked. . . and Shabby and Kinda. . . Smokey, but that Cole had a big smile.
Yeah, they were probably higher than a kite, but I thought it was better not mention it. Why clutter up the memory of Nice with its details? Besides, he said that whenever he drove by the station after that, which was not very often, he always thought his one and only celebrity observation.
I thought about my own memories of the Rock Island Line. They were the classic memoirs, the faint sound of a train whistle when I drift to sleep. . . He was a distant sound that seemed to come from somewhere down the lane cinder black behind our house. On prairie flatlands of Illinois, one could hear the sound of miles before finally losing. It was the same reassuring, but what's that lonely Poets and songwriters often write.
We turned the corner and fired into the train yard, and in the dim light of lanterns, we saw about a dozen freight cars lined up on the tracks … cars, they were called back then. The place was quite dark and deserted, until I noticed a little guard shack on the corner of the court. And there was light.
Now my father was really fun. Any reason to be near old trains. My mother had just along for the ride and make me happy, but it certainly has not had any thought of finding the gifts I sent.
Someone poked their head outside the hut. I said "Hey Look! Let's go." We walked to the hut and the skinny guy with a Crewcut proved be someone from my old school. I do not remember his name, but we vaguely recognize each other.
I explained my story how I shipped two boxes from Chicago 10 days ago, and how they had never happened, and how I came all the way down to spend Christmas with my family, and now the presents were missing and that surely they must be there somewhere, probably in one of the boxcars, so if Please could I, oh! Please look through the cars and see if I could find them?
My mother gasped and looked at me with his mouth open as if she had just came to mind why we were actually there. Yes, I asked him to unlock each car so I can climb and dig in the dark. But it seemed like a request quite reasonable to me. My father just shook his head in disbelief, but he could not stop smiling. And the young man seemed to be excited!
He got a flashlight and two of us started through the first car, tripping over piles of cardboard boxes, which probably contained Christmas presents that he too had not been delivered on time.
My Mom and Dad stood outside looking through the sliding doors, breathing the fumes in the cold air night. I am also sure she sucked air through his teeth at the thought of us bother this poor young man, lonely night watchman who had to work Christmas Eve, one could say that I was having fun.
We just started digging through the second car when I saw our address on the cartons, then the other. I screamed! It was Christmas miracle. It seemed almost surreal, and yet something seemed to be the most natural thing to occur.
I was so happy and so grateful. He helped us put the cards on the back seat and I handed him a big tip and moving away, we were all wearing smiles warm fuzzy. We came, we opened gifts, laughed our heads off and finally had a cup of warm eggnog.
My parents are part of my memories today, but if the guy in the box is still there, I hope that I remember the night he became my hero of Christmas.
