Rationing Word afflict Broadcast News Media
At one time or another, Americans have experienced shortages of oil, water, rubber, cereals, sugar, butter, cheese, meat and vaccines against influenza. The latest shortage could be a part of speech. Media broadcast news seems to have adopted the word rationing.
The verbs were once the stock in exchange for new media-oriented action. news today, however, television and radio are many scattered fragments of sentences lacking verbs, posing penalties.
In the evening newscast, an anchor said:
"The president released his budget proposal today. And on the block, the projects against floods and management of California wildfire. "
Neither of these states is a complete sentence. The first contains a word that looks like a verb, but it's not, it is a gerund. This second fragment of the financial "Block" lack of a verb of any kind.
To form a sentence, a group of words must contain at least one subject and a verb, and must stand independently.
The verb is such an essential component of a sentence that can be a sentence by itself. Stop! Hurry! Listen! Jump! These are mandatory sentences, begging or ordering someone to take some action. In such sentences, the subject "you" is heard, a concept that the "Dick and Jane" readers from the 1930s taught. "Look, Dick. Look, Jane. See Sally. See Silly Sally. "
Not all verbs can be independent, however. The word "flow", for example, is meaningless without an accompanying name – a subject. What are feeds? Perhaps the River. That makes sense.
Similarly, a name can not operate without a verb that accompanies it. Television. What is it? Watching TV? The dust from the television? Buy a TV? To turn off the TV? The verb indicates what you want to do with television.
In the story of a series of fires in Southern California, a report anchor Television news:
"This is only the second week of May, yet Cal Fire has already responded to three major wildfires in our state – a Los Angeles County, one in San Bernardino County, and later in Tehama County. All these fires, though, now at 100 one hundred content. "
This closing statement is not a punishment, because it lacks a verb. It consists only of a subject ("the fires") and a parenthetical phrase ("but now 100 percent contained"). This fragment appears to be leading to a final statement. A discerning viewer would have expected something like "All these fires, but now 100 percent contained, may continue simmering for 48 hours or more."
Why, Then, the presenter does exclude a verb? He could not save time, because he could turn a phrase fragment in his plugging it one syllable verb "are". All these fires, however, are now 100 percent contained Et if he really could not spare half a second to add "Are", he could remove a word with one syllable – the preposition "of" – that is superfluous in the context of the sentence. The result: All these fires, however, are now 100 percent contained.
Broadcasters gerunds common mistake for verbs, resulting in fragments of sentences. Here are some examples of this recurring gaffe that we agreed on 13 of the 26 stations and networks that we have followed in recent weeks.
- Harvard Business Publishing to launch a new website for professional leadership development experiences that seek to interactive learning and information on talent management and strategy. "
NO. Harvard Business Publishing has launched a website. - "Businessman racing mogul Roger Penske finally publicly discuss all the problems surrounding Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick. Of course, Roger Penske was the fourth of our success XL Superbowl a few years ago. "
NO. Roger Penske finally discusses (Or finally discussed). - "Hello. Terme stock index plummeting today after JP Morgan Chase bought Bear Stearns at a price "fire sale" has, and the Federal Reserve provided cash emergency on Wall Street. "
NO. Stock index futures fell.
- San Jose police investigate Police yesterday morning on a pursuit that ended with officers shooting at the fleeing car. According to the CHP, officers tried to pull a driver more on Route 87 at about 2:30 am. The driver, who did not have his headlights on, stepped on the gas instead. "
NO. San Jose police are investigating. - "The Ancient Order of Hibernians to celebrate St. Patrick's Day today with a parade in Dogtown. Grand Marshal Jim Mohan says he will start the viaduct Tam Avenue at 12:30, and run in Manchester. "
NO. The Ancient Order of Hibernians will celebrate with a parade (which had not yet occurred at the time of the bulletin new). - "Atlanta residents bracing for more storms after a tornado hit last night downtown. National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for much of Georgia and parts of South Carolina and Alabama. Chairman Bush granted federal aid to much of Texas after wildfires spread across the state. More than 133,000 acres have burned since high winds fanned the flames yesterday. No injuries were reported. Firefighters still trying to extinguish the flames. "
NO. Atlanta residents are preparing or have commenced bracing last night. President Bush has granted (or says he will give) federal assistance. Firefighters are still trying to extinguish the flames.
A gerund is a word which, although derived from a verb, functions as a noun in a sentence. Gerunds are easy to recognize because they end in-ing. The race words, painting, working and singing are gerunds.
Flood threat in the sentence the valley, the object is Flood gerund, the verb is threatened, and the direct object of the verb is in the Jordan Valley. The subject could just as easily been another name – flood or deluge, for example.
ING ending is also used in the English language to form participles, which are verbal forms, but can not stand on their own. A participle can be an adjective – for example:
- The plumber fixed the leaking faucet.
- Dripping, Nancy took refuge against the storm in the old barn. (In this sentence, which flows used adjective to describe the appearance of Nancy.)
A participle is also a verb that is used to produce certain times in combination with auxiliary verbs. Wilhelm is in the sentence running in the marathon today, the verb consists of two words: running. is Together, they form this progressive tense, which is used to indicate a continuing action or condition. Its use in the sentence example is appropriate if the race is still ongoing, and if Wilhelm is running right now.
A participle can also be used to form the past progressive tense, which indicates a past action that continues ended at some point in the past. Here's an example: The committee members were traveling through much of April.
Another variant is the perfect gift progressive tense, which consists of a sequence and three-word verb is used to indicate an ongoing that can continue indefinitely. Here's an example: The technician worked on the air for three hours, but it is not yet finished.
Maybe the presenters, or writers who prepare their scripts, mistakenly believe that the action to send signals over-suffix verbs do good. This possibility may help explain the motivation behind these new extracts lost:
- "The leaders of Georgia to ask people who work in downtown Atlanta to take even a day off, even if time is wonderful in "fishing town. They continue to clean the areas hardest hit by a tornado Friday in Atlanta. Many streets are still closed, Hundreds of traffic lights are still not in the capital of Georgia. "
- "Former President Bill Clinton a swing through Northern California today, trying to convince undecided voters. Clinton speaks to supporters at Cal Expo today. He did not mention the name of Barack Obama, but it highlighted the differences in the health care proposal from Hillary Clinton. "
- "After the break, we'll tell you why an annual tradition in the face of difficult times." TV [Station teaser for an article on an appearance by the Blue Angels] Fair California Capital
- "Sprint Nextel is merging with Clearwire to form a wireless company – a new:. Backup Comcast, Intel and Google. This will be set up competition for AT & T and Verizon. And directors of Yahoo shareholders face game now, after rejecting Microsoft's offer. "
Odd practice ration verb is not limited to local news stations. news network to engage in too.
- "In Iraq, fierce fighting in the southern city of Basra. Thousands of U.S. and Iraqi forces take action against Shia militias it. The area around Basra is the main source of oil in Iraq. "
One of these three states – the last – is a complete sentence. - "An accident on a river Myanmar involving a vessel carrying supplies for the International Red Cross for victims of last week powerful cyclone. Joe Lowry The group said the boat hit a stump and overturned. Lowry also said they will take a different path time next, but the river was a faster way to get to the surviving victims. If you think it can not be worse, think again. John Lawrence CNN reports gas prices continue to climb. "
In some cases, lack of sentence fragments a semblance of a verb, not even a gerund. Among the 12 states in a report Fox News Radio heard on May 7 at KFBK radio in Sacramento, only four were complete sentences. Four others have used a gerund in place of a name, while four pieces – highlighted here in italics – Verbs lacked any kind. Take a look:
- "It was Senator Chris Dodd of Connecticut. Debate in the House has just begun on this bill. The situation in Myanmar is worsening. Reports of riots and fights over food for days after a cyclone leveled the country. The Embassy of the United States believes that the death toll could reach 100,000. And oil prices now above $ 123 a barrel for the first time. This is a new record. Consumer credit now double the rate two months ago. Digit losses on Wall Street Triple. The Bell Closing Dow Jones fall with 206 points. Philadelphia face a situation with the police and citizens. The city removed a sergeant and five officers on the street to investigate a video showing officers kicking and three suspects. "
With more clever writing, problematic text fragments in this newsletter could be corrected without adding a single syllable – and in some cases, with fewer syllables. Here is our revised versions:
- Fragment: The situation in Myanmar deteriorates). (12 syllables
Correction: The situation Myanmar has deteriorated 12. (syllables) - Fragment: Reports of riots and fights during food for days after a cyclone leveled the country). (22 syllables
Correction: Riots and fighting for food occurs days after a cyclone leveled the country. (22 syllables) - Now price: Fragment And oil above $ 123 $ A barrel for the first time. (22 syllables)
Correction: And oil prices now exceed $ 123 per barrel for first 22. (syllables) - Fragment: consumer credit now double the rate two months ago). (16 syllables
Correction: loans for consumption has doubled over the past two months. (15 syllables) - Fragment: digit losses on Wall Street Triple). (9 syllables
Correction: Wall Street bears triple-digit losses). (9 syllables - Fragment: The closing bell with Dow Jones falling 206 points. (14 syllables)
Correction: At the closing bell, The Dow Jones dropped 206 points). (13 syllables
In addition, almost all sponsored programs broadcast on public television stations and commercial line of credit private grammatically same: This program presented by corrupt …. What construction passive does not have an appropriate verb. It could become a single grammatically correct sentence past tense by adding the auxiliary verb was (This program was presented by …) or it could be placed in past tense (This program was presented by …).
The next time you're feeling generous, send a few verbs to your TV or favorite radio station or broadcast network. Or let them know they can make their own if they take gerund suffix-ing Many use them interchangeably. The result could be rewarding.

Swing Extender $29.95 Swing Extender Golf Swing Trainer The Swing Extender prohibits collapsing of the arms while encouraging a better shoulder turn. It’s the hardest move to master and feels completely unnatural to most amateurs, but once it’s learned, the rewards are most satisfying. Increased distance, accuracy and lower scores are a direct result of the maximum clubhead acceleration you create with your wider arc and fully extended arms. The instant you strap it on your arm and take a swing, you’ll hit the golf ball longer, straighter and with more control. That’s because the Swing Extender creates the proper extension of your arms during the backswing by preventing the arms from overfolding and then promotes the correct release of the arms and hands during the downswing. This 90 degree “power angle” formed at the top of your backswing allows you to create a wider swing arc by keeping your left arm straight right arm for left-handers . The Swing Extender instantly corrects the most common flaw in golf by: * Extending your arms throughout your swing * Creating a wider arc * Establishing a perfect position at the top of your backswing * Promoting the correct release through impact The Swing Extender is the newest hot product in golf because it – * Is easy to use and virtually nonexistant to the user * Fits golfers right- or left-handed of all sized — even juniors * Allows a complete swing including follow-through * Is used by many of the country’s leading golf instructors and touring professionals because of its effectiveness and simplicity If you have any questions about this product or would like to order by phone, please call us Toll Free at 888-733-8383.
