Flat or vertical?

I went through some serious changes in my swing instructor. He said earlier that I flatten. I did, then he said the unit was fixed and I could not go back. I had a considerable evolution for some time, until I started to abuse the "not flat" things. I have three days to work on the range, because my club is to have an invitation. My question is there a way to tell if you're backswing is flat or vertical, and what is the perfect swing plane? Thank you I'm not in the invitaional, I just have time to work on the range (closing price). You must be 18 years old I think, and I'm 4 years under that mark.
